Montpellier Open 2022: Roberto Bautista Agut vs. Alexander Bublik Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Montpellier Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinal on Friday, February 4th, 2022.

Roberto Bautista Agut remains one of the favorites to win the Montpellier Open this week. The Spanish baseliner finished runner-up in last year’s final and has already made a positive start in his quest to return to the championship match this year. But his quarterfinal match against Alexander Bublik could be an obstacle in the making.

Roberto Bautista Agut ended the feel-good run of Gilles Simon to progress into the quarterfinals of the Montpellier Open. The Spaniard had established a 6-4 3-2 lead when Simon was forced to retire with lower back problem. French veteran Simon had been in good form from the qualifying rounds after he was surprisingly omitted from wild card selection at his home tournament. But his first-round win over Lucas Pouille, which took three hours, proved a pyrrhic victory. The win came at the expense of hurting his body in a bruising battle against Bautista agut.

Sixth seed Alexander Bublik has navigated his way past a couple of tricky challengers at the Montpellier Open. First, he toppled Tallon Griekspoor in two tiebreak sets, hammering an astonishing 20 aces in the match. Then he needed to dig deep to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Wednesday. Bublik improves to 3-2 for the year, and is looking to reach his first tour-level semifinal since Newport, last July.

The head-to-head between Roberto Bautista Agut and Alexander Bublik is tied at 1-1 heading into Friday’s quarterfinal at the Montpellier Open. Bublik was in his early teenage years when he inflicted defeat to Bautista Agut at the Kremlin Cup in 2016. But the Spaniard avenged that loss last year at the Qatar Open in straight sets. Bublik is at long odds to spring an upset. He did not really find his range in Australia, but he seems to be back playing his best tennis this week. His serve is firing on all cylinders as is his focus. Bautista Agut, in contrast, wasn’t at his usual free-flowing best in his first match. This could turn into a winnable quarterfinal for the Kazakh.
