Sydney Open 2022: Albert Ramos Vinolas vs. Federico Delbonis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Sydney Open as Albert Ramos Vinolas takes on Federico Delbonis in the first round on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022.

After ending his hard court drought at the ATP Cup, will Federico Delbonis find his footing at the Sydney Open? Or will Albert Ramos Vinolas secure his first win of 2022? It is pertinent to note that Ramos Vinolas is part of the Spain team that has reached the ATP Cup final at the time of writing.

Albert Ramos Vinolas lost both doubles matches alongside Pedro Martinez at the ATP Cup this past week, but team Spain had already completed their passage into the final. They were two dead rubbers against Serbia and Poland, which came after Bautista Agut and Pablo Carreno Busta had done the job singles. Ramos Vinolas will come to the 2022 Sydney Open for his first singles outing of the new season. The 33-year-old lefty won his third ATP title on the clay courts of Estoril last season.

Federico Delbonis ended his own personal drought this past week at the ATP Cup. Wins over Aleksandre Metreveli and Michail Pervolarakis gave him a blueprint to more success, but not enough to lift Argentina out of the group. The Argentine left-hander was without a main draw win on hard courts for precisely two years. His last win came at the 2020 Australian Open first round when he defeated Joao Sousa. Delbonis failed to win another match outside his beloved clay. However, his terrific form on the dirt was adequate to keep his ranking afloat inside the Top 50.

Albert Ramos Vinolas trails Federico Delbonis 2-6 in their head-to-head. These two clay-court campaigners are two years apart, and remarkably, have contested all eight previous meetings on clay. Delbonis has won three in a row including their last two matches in 2021 season. The onus is on the Argentine to make amends for that appalling record on the surface. And on recent form in this rivalry, the Argentine should be a nightmare opponent for the Spaniard at the Sydney Open.
