TennisSection previews the 2022 Melbourne Open as Andy Murray takes on Facundo Bagnis in the first round on Tuesday, January 4th, 2021.
Will Facundo Bagnis come out here and beat one of the best players of the last 20 years as he aims to cause the upset? Will Andy Murray show us the strong form which he showed in Abu Dhabi just a few weeks ago? This will be a good match to see where Murray’s level is at before the Australian Open, but will he be able to prevent the upset here at the 2022 Melbourne Open?
Facundo Bagnis is a good player on his day, playing some good tennis in clay court conditions mainly and having been in the top 100 for a few years now. Facundo plays with a lot of spin and likes to take the ball high and rising against his opponents. However, in these hard court conditions, there are a few adaptations which he is yet to master and will most likely not at this stage of his career. Facundo needs to be able to hit back with less time, have better movement off the ball, and he needs to be able to hit flat. This is much easier said than done however as he now meets Andy Murray at the 2022 Melbourne Open.
Andy Murray will be roaring to go here in Australia as he has been preparing well in the last few weeks. Most notably, Murray was able to make it to the Mubadala World Tennis Championship Final after he beat the likes of Dan Evans and Rafael Nadal. Although Murray lost to Rublev in the Final, he showed great determination and he was playing at a high level. This is great to see as it means that we are closer to seeing the high level of tennis which Murray can play. These next few weeks will be important for Andy to get used to the conditions and be in his best form for the Australian Open, but right now he needs to focus on the task at hand of beating Facundo Bagnis at the 2022 Melbourne Open.
Andy Murray and Facundo Bagnis have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Facundo is currently higher ranked than Andy, he is nowhere near the level really. Andy has been stuck in this ranking position really due to the ranking freeze and he will know that he has a strong chance of getting back in the top 100 if not higher this year. Andy is a great player and showed us that he still has the level in Abu Dhabi. Facundo could have had a chance if this was on clay and lets say 6 months ago, but at this moment in time, and in these hard court conditions at the 2022 Melbourne Open, Andy should cruise.
