TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Alexander Zverev takes on Taylor Fritz on Day 4 on Tuesday, January 4th, 2021.
Will Taylor Fritz be able to cause yet another upset here at the 2022 ATP Cup, but this time against a top 5 player? Will Alexander Zverev get another solid win under his belt as he aims to get something going for Team Germany in this group? Both players are good in their own right, but will Alexander Zverev get something done for Team Germany’s chances here?
Taylor Fritz played a great opening match here at the 2022 ATP Cup, beating the higher ranked and favorite, Felix Auger-Aliassime in 3 tight sets, coming back from a set down. Taylor was superb on his serve throughout the match, winning 78% and 79% of first and second serves respectively. Taylor was able to only show Felix one break point throughout the match, but he was able to save that. This form is similar to the form we saw from the American last year here in Australia and he is sure to want to continue playing with this form as he now meets Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev showed us his great tennis that he was playing throughout the majority of last season, beating the in form Brit, Cameron Norrie in straight sets. The only fault really found in Zverev’s game during that match was his lack of power on the second serve, which meant he only won 50% of points off of it. However, the fact that he was winning 84% of first serves and got his first serve in 85% of the time, meant that he did not need to really worry about the second serve. Alexander Zverev will be disappointed that Team Germany lost the tie eventually in the doubles, and he knows that he needs to get the job done here against Taylor Fritz at the 2022 ATP Cup to give Team Germany any hope.
Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz have met 5 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 3-2. They met twice last year, with both players winning a match against each other. They are two similar players in terms of big serve and forehand. However, where Zverev shines more is that he has a better backhand. Based on their opening matches, I expect for this match to be an entertaining and long encounter, with both players having chances to win. However, if I have to choose a player to win it, I think it is going to be Alexander Zverev. This match means more to Zverev and he will leave more on the line compared to Taylor who will have a bit more room to lose if he isn’t playing at his best.
