TennisSection previews the 2022 Melbourne Open as Nick Kyrgios takes on Alex Molcan in the first round on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022.
Will Nick Kyrgios make a winning return to the ATP Tour at the 2022 Melbourne Open? Will Alex Molcan master an upset win? Ahead of what should be an intriguing month of tennis, Kyrgios will be a busy fixture Down Under.
Nick Kyrgios is back. That is the headline-making introduction to 2022 at the Melbourne Open. The fiery and sometimes furious Kyrgios has taken a wild card at this week’s tournament and at the Sydney Classic just before the Australian Open. The 26-year-old continues to take a cautious approach to travelling in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Kyrgios played in just six tournaments last season aside from the Laver Cup. He finished with a 7-7 record for the year. Kyrgios’ major highlights in 2021 included reaching the third round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon respectively. While his big serve remains his potent weapon in his arsenal, the lack of match practice could count against him when he takes on Alex Molcan on Tuesday.
Alex Molcan made his presence count in 2021, as he reached his first tour-level final in Belgrade, falling to World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. His performances in Serbia’s capital ensured a top-100 charge was on the cards. He won the first of his two ATP Challenger titles in Liberec without dropping a set. And then towards the end of the year, he bagged another title in Helsinki, defeating former World No. 28 Joao Sousa in the final. Molcan has a solid game and much prefers to play on clay. His lefty forehand is a shot that mirrors Rafael Nadal’s in terms of action and bend. Can he surprise Nick Kyrgios at the Melbourne Open?
This will be the first meeting between Nick Kyrgios and Alex Molcan. Kyrgios is the more accomplished player on the main tour, but he comes into this contest at the Melbourne Open woefully short of matches. Molcan on the other hand arrives in Melbourne on the back of a splendid season – the best of his career by far. Kyrgios will utilize his humongous serve to earn cheap points and look to take the ball early off the return to put Molcan under constant pressure. While the odds seem to suggest the Aussie will likely win here at a canter, the Slovakian who has now passed Kyrgios in the ATP rankings should not be underestimated.
