ATP Cup 2022: Denis Shapovalov vs. Dan Evans Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Denis Shapovalov meets Dan Evans on Tuesday January 4th, 2022 at 2:30am EST.

Who will win this battle of two contrasting styles? Will it be the power of Denis Shapovalov or the finesse of Dan Evans? Both Canada and Great Britain expect big things here at the 2022 Cup and the Canadians in particular will be desperate to register the win here after losing their first tie. Who will get the point for their home country?

Denis Shapovalov is ranked #14 on the ATP Tour and is Canada’s number two player here at the 2022 ATP Cup. The talented young lefty has showed signs of his potential over the past few years, but has truly broken out recently, breaking into the top 10 for the first time in 2021. If he can improve on his ability to focus and stay calm under pressure he will be able to compete for the big titles this season as he definitely has the game to do so. The Australian Open will be the first big opportunity to make his presence felt in 2022, and this tournament serves as ideal preparation. His opponent Dan Evans also enjoyed a great season in 2021 and has started extremely strongly here in Sydney, so the Canadian star will truly have to be at his best.

Dan Evans is Britain’s number two and is ranked #25 on the ATP circuit. He had been a very solid ATP player for the past few years but broke out last season, winning his first title and playing very consistent tennis. Evans has carried that momentum into the 2022 ATP Cup, demolishing Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 6-2 in extraordinary fashion. His full repertoire was on display and when he is in this sort of form he is very difficult to beat. His opponent Denis Shapovalov will start this match as the favorite, but Evans’ experience will be crucial here, and he has exactly the sort of game to frustrate the young Canadian.

This will be the third meeting between the two players, with the players splitting the first two matches evenly. Both players had successful 2021 seasons and I am expecting a fierce battle between two passionate players. It really can go either way and will come down to who plays better on the day, but I am going with Denis Shapovalov to get the win here. Dan Evans is a very good player but cannot compete with the Canadian if he is in form and striking the ball cleanly. Evans is very consistent and has an all-around game that can be very frustrating, but despite his best efforts the Canadian should get a tough win here, earning the point for his country here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
