TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Andrey Rublev (6) Salvatore Caruso (Q) in the Second Round on Wednesday, April 14th 2021.
Will Salvatore Caruso be able to cause what would be a very big upset and big career win for himself against the player with the highest wins this year? Will Andrey Rublev continue to dominate the ATP Tour and show us all that he is still the man of the moment and he will continue to rise in the tennis world? Both players will be very confident coming into this match, but only one will make their way to the Third Round. Who will it be?
Salvatore Caruso was handed a very easy first round draw, meeting the local wildcard Lucas Catarina, however, it was not as easy as it was expected for the experienced Italian. Lucas Catarina took the first set and made Salvatore Caruso fight very hard to eventually beat him in 3 sets (3)6-7/7-6(5)/6-3. Salvatore Caruso can blame the rust of not having played on clay for a while, however, he should have really done much better in this match where he is much more experienced. Caruso will be happy that he is in the Second Round, but he will also be very wary that if Lucas Catarina can push him to his limits, he will have to raise his level drastically if he is to stand a chance against Andrey Rublev in the Second Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Andrey Rublev has been great in 2021, leading the ATP Tour in match wins with a W/L record of 20-4. Rublev was the favourite entering the Semi-finals of the Miami Masters a couple weeks ago, but was shockingly beaten by the eventual champion Hubert Hurkacz. However, with his amazing mentality, I am sure that Andrey Rublev will be ready to come back out here and get back to business in a solid fashion. Rublev has an amazing powerful game both on his serve, but also on his return game where he just outpowers his opponents and moves them around the court continuously, tiring them out. Rublev will be very happy with his first match here as he is meeting a player who struggled against a much lesser opponent in Salvatore Caruso.
Andrey Rublev and Salvatore Caruso have met once before, with Andrey Rublev leading the head to head 1-0. They met in the Third Round of the 2020 US Open where Rublev won in straight sets 6-0/6-4/6-0. Unfortunately for Salvatore Caruso, there is no chance that he will be able to hang with Andrey Rublev, especially with him just coming through that First Round match which he should have dominated but did not. Rublev is the man of the moment, and he is very determined to continue this momentum going. I expect Andrey Rublev to come out here, win this match in straight sets, and make his way to the Third Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
