TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Dominik Koepfer in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, August 25th, 2021.
Will Pablo Carreno Busta get a solid win? Will Dominik Koepfer pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have the top seed taking on a very dangerous opponent. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Pablo Carreno Busta came through today in three sets in a match where he maybe should have won in two, but it is normal for some of the lower ranked and less consistent players to have some turbulent matches. His serving numbers were definitely down, and those will have to be corrected by the time he plays Dominik Koepfer, as he is a much better player than his last opponent, so it will be a tough match for him if he does not serve more consistently. He did mostly do what he should be doing though, which is stay consistent and pull the trigger whenever the opportunity is obvious. Koepfer is a lefty, so it will be interesting how Busta approaches that challenge, he’ll most likely want to get into a lot of cross-court exchanges that go from his forehand to his backhand, which will open up a lot of space for him to be a little more aggressive and go up the line. I do think he’ll need to amp it up a little bit with the groundstrokes in terms of pace, spin, and just overall aggression level from the back of the court. If he does all of that successfully, I do expect him to come through without a ton of trouble and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Dominik Koepfer has a very tough one ahead of him in having to play number one seeded Pablo Carreno Busta. He came through a tough one in his first match, losing the first set to fight back with two more tight ones. He also didn’t serve particularly well, although he was able to use his lefty forehand quite a bit to play aggressively and edge out his opponent in the big moments. Against Busta, he will definitely need to play aggressively, as that just isn’t a player Koepfer should try to grind with too much, especially considering he has a good chance of losing a lot of the cross-court exchanges where it will be easier for Pablo to pull the trigger. He will want to try to run around a lot of backhands and really crank his forehand, to beat Pablo he will want to try to go for winners, or at the very least set up easy closing opportunities, this also means approaching the net as much as possible which isn’t really his style or many players on tour at the moment for that matter. However, if he stays aggressive and doesn’t allow himself to miss too much, I like his chances to really push Pablo Carreno Busta and try to get into the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Dominik Koepfer have met twice before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 2-0. Both of their meetings were this year in 2021, with the last one being just last week in Cincinnati, while the other one was just a few weeks before that at the Olympics. This really pits Carreno-Busta as the favorite to win the match, as they’ve met twice in such a short time-span, with Koepfer struggling to win that many games off of him, let alone a set and obviously the match. I feel like Koepfer could be a good match-up against Busta, but he has to play aggressive, and at the moment with where the level of Koepfer is compared to Busta and their recent meetings, the advantage really goes to Pablo Carreno Busta to take it and move on to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
