TennisSection previews the 2021 Acapulco Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (1) meets John Isner in the Round of 16 on Thursday March 18th, 2021.
This is sure to be an exciting match between two of the biggest servers on the ATP Tour. Can the veteran American John Isner upset the young Greek superstar Stefanos Tsitsipas? Both players advanced to the Round of 16 without any issues and will be ready and rearing to go here. Who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Acapulco Open in Mexico?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked #5 in the ATP world rankings, and is a global tennis superstar in every sense of the word. Big things have been expected of him for years, and he is finally making good of that promise and showing the world that he can compete with the best players in the world. He has gotten off to a solid start here in 2021, most notably with a five set upset win over Rafael Nadal in the Quarter-Finals of the Australian Open. Tsitsipas has also started strongly here, dispatching Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-1, dominating the Frenchman with his big serve and powerful groundstrokes. He will be hugely motivated here after a disappointing week in Marseille, and eager to claim his first title of the year. He is the huge favorite here against John Isner and is the main contender for the title at the 2021 Acapulco Open.
His opponent, American John Isner is a former top 10 player who has fallen off a bit in recent years. Currently ranked a respectable #27 in the world, he will be eager to produce a strong showing here to get his career back on track. He missed almost the entire 2020 season due to injury and COVID-19 concerns, and chose to miss the Australian leg of the 2021 season. Despite the long layoff, he was very impressive in his First Round win over Salvatore Caruso, winning 6-4, 6-3. Isner is heavily reliant on his serve, which is one of the best in ATP history and will be looking to that as he seeks to upset Stefanos Tsitsipas. He enters this match against the young superstar as the big underdog and it will take a huge effort for him to get the win here.
The two players have faced each other four times throughout their careers, with the head to head series tied 2-2. Stefanos Tsitsipas has won the last two matches, and has come a long way since then. While Isner can never be discounted due to his huge serve, it is very unlikely that he will be able to get the win here. He won’t get many break opportunities, such is Tsitsipas’ dominance from the baseline and his only chance is to try to steal a tiebreaker. That is certainly possible, but the young Greek is in supreme form in the moment and it will take something truly special to stop him here at the 2021 Acapulco. John Isner won’t be the person to stop him, if in fact someone does. Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in two tight sets, with a tiebreaker a strong possibility.
