Kremlin Cup 2021: Marin Cilic vs. Ricardas Berankis Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Kremlin Cup as Marin Cilic takes on Ricardas Berankis in the semifinals on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021.

Will Marin Cilic move on? Will Ricardas Berankis pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have an unlikely matchup of two in-form players clashing for the last two. Who will move on to the final at the 2021 Kremlin Cup?

Marin Cilic dominated Martinez to book his spot in the semifinals and take on Ricardas Berankis. Berankis is an unlikely opponent, but definitely not one to be underestimated. Cilic played incredible to win his last match, winning 84% of his first serves and converting on ⅘ break points. If he can keep it up, I think he will beat Berankis, the conditions here favor him heavily, as it’s a really quick court and we know how much Cilic loves fast courts, considering that he’s a huge server and hits big and flat groundstrokes, trying to be really aggressive with them, especially this tournament. It won’t be super easy, but I expect him to get it done and book his place in the final at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Ricardas Berankis got a great win as well to set up this meeting with Marin Cilic. He took out Mannarino, who happened to be in great form having taken out the number one seed. Berankis has a tough one ahead of him, as he hasn’t been playing too well before this tournament, so he doesn’t really have the match readiness, or the lasting form to take on Cilic. It’s not as if Cilic hasn’t had his struggles too, not being too consistent as of late. However, Cilic simply has the advantage, he’s been incredible all tournament, taking out some great players, while Berankis has had a little bit of an easier road. Berankis has a chance, but it’s still unlikely that he’ll be able to do more than simply push Cilic as the two clash for a spot in the final at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.

Marin Cilic and Ricardas Berankis have met once before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, with Cilic winning in 5 sets. This meeting is hardly relevant for discussion, but it does give hope for Berankis, when both players were younger and playing at a higher level, Berankis could really push Cilic on a fast court. That does imply that Berankis has the game to be competitive to push Cilic on a court with this kind of speed, still, Cilic has shown that he’s in really good form and ready to edge past Berankis to claim a spot in the final at the 2021 Kremlin Cup.
