TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021.
Will Pablo Carreno Busta move on? Will Karen Khachanov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two different playstyles. Who will move onto the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Karen Khachanov played an okay match to set up this meeting with Pablo Carreno Busta. Despite winning relatively easily against a tough opponent, both their numbers were relatively low, particularly on serve. Those numbers will have to improve if he wants to take on PCB. One of Khachanov’s biggest problems is his inconsistency, and if he is able to make a high percentage of first serves, then I feel like he can push Carreno Busta. However, due to the really slow conditions, Khachanov will struggle against him, as Busta is much better on slow courts than him, and Khachanov has historically struggled on slow surfaces, against Busta as well. Let’s see if he can play some solid tennis and improve his game to try and stay in it and fight for a spot in the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Pablo Carreno Busta got a great win to set up this meeting with Karen Khachanov, despite his opponent being on the weaker side, he made a ton of first serves, dispatching him easily, not allowing his opponent to win one point on his second serve. He has a great shot here, as Khachanov is a good matchup for him on slow surfaces, Khachanov has a big game, and it’s definitely nullified on a court like Indian Wells this year. If Busta can just redirect Khachanov’s second serves easily, then he can get on top of the points early and get ahead in the sets. Still, Khachanov can surprise us and has been able to take out Busta at many times, so maybe we’re in for a thriller as the two fight for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Karen Khachanov and Pablo Carreno Busta have met 6 times before, with the head to head being tied at 3-3. The 3 meetings that PCB won, all came on slow courts. The 3 meetings that Khachanov won, all came on faster surfaces. Their most recent one was in Tokyo, with Khachanov winning easily, however, things can quickly change on a slow surface like this. I expect PCB to tough it out in the long rallies, and I also expect him to serve great. If he is just able to stay solid throughout the match, then I definitely expect him to get the win in a tight match as he attempts to move on to the last 16 here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
