TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Novak Djokovic (1) takes on Alexander Zverev (4) in the Semi-Finals on Friday, September 10th, 2021.
Will we see a repeat of the huge win by Alexander Zverev in a big tournament this year as he aims to make the Final for two years in a row here at the 2021 US Open? Will Novak Djokovic put himself in the best position to get himself close to the Calendar Grand Slam and a record breaking 21st Grand Slam in the Men’s Singles? This is going to be a huge match between two friends and two great rivals, but only one will make their way to the Final here at the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Alexander Zverev cruised through his Quarter-Final match against the extremely in form and big hitting, Lloyd Harris, winning his match in straight sets 7-6/6-3/6-4. The first set was quite tight as both players were struggling with the big screens in the arena showing the live action which was distracting. However, Zverev maintained his composure and got the set eventually, afterwhich he dominated to get himself into the Semi-Finals here. Zverev in on a 16-match winning streak, all beginning at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he met Novak Djokovic as well in the Semi-Finals, and he will aim to get another win over him here at the 2021 US Open.
Novak Djokovic had to fight from a set down against the in form Matteo Berrettini in the Quarter-Finals, beating the Italian in 4 sets 5-7/6-2/6-2/6-3. Novak Djokovic was very strong all throughout the match except for that one moment where he let his guard down in the opening set. Novak will be confident with that win and he knows that he is strengthening his game with every match. However, Matteo is not the best returner on the backhand side which was a big advantage in this match. Now, Novak will have to ensure he is at a much higher level as he meets Alexander Zverev here at the 2021 US Open who is as good as him on the backhand side at times.
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev have met 9 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 6-3. They met a couple months ago in Tokyo where Zverev won in 3 sets 1-6/6-3/6-1. Both players have been in superb form all week, and they have shown that they are ready to give it their all. However, going into this match, I think Djokovic will have a slight edge. Although Zverev has been more dominant over the last 2 weeks, Novak always brings his best out at the late stages of a Grand Slams and he dooesn’t get nervous with all his experience. Adding to this, Novak said he is prepared to give it all and leave it all on the line in what could potentially be a 5-set thriller, showing his strength and energy left in the tank. One of the reasons Zverev beat Novak in Tokyo was because Novak was not all there physically, but after his break, Novak is back, and I expect for him to get a huge, but tight win, under his belt as he gets himself into the Final of the 2021 US Open in search for his 21st Grand Slam title.
