TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (2) meets Alexander Zverev (3) in the Semi-Finals on Saturday August 21st, 2021.
A blockbuster match is upon us here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open as second seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece faces the third seeded German Alexander Zverev for a spot in Sunday’s Final. Both men have firmly established themselves at the top of the rankings with some great performances this year, and will eager to end their US Open preparations with a bang. This match has all the makings of a very close and explosive encounter, who will get the win and advance to the Final?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the second seed here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open and is ranked at a career-high #3 in the world. The Greek superstar is enjoying a breakout season on the ATP Tour, having won his first ATP-1000 title in Monte-Carlo and reaching his first Grand Slam Semi-Final at Roland Garros. He was handed a tough draw here in Cincinnati, and while he hasn’t looked 100% he will be delighted to have come through those matches unscathed. After a solid win over Sebastian Korda in the Second Round, he had back to back three setters with Lorenzo Sonego and Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the Semi-Finals against nemesis Alexander Zverev. Tsitsipas started shakily against FAA, but was dominant in the third set, taking over with his serve and groundstrokes to crush the Canadian 6-1. He may be considered the slight favorite here due to his superior head to head record, but this match is looking quite even at the moment.
Alexander Zverev is ranked #5 on the ATP Tour and is the third seed here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. Like his opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas he has been enjoying a solid season, most notably winning the Madrid Open and the gold medal at the Olympics. After his Olympic exploits he will be on a high and very confident and has been outstanding so far here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open, reaching the Semi-Finals without dropping a set. He was completely dominant in his Quarter-Final win over Casper Ruud, winning 6-1, 6-3 in a crushing defeat of the #11th ranked Norwegian. He won almost 80% of his service points in that match, and has only faced one break point in the entire tournament, a statistic that bodes well for his chances here. In this type of form it is hard to look past him here despite his lower ranking, and he will be liking his chances.
This will be the ninth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Stefanos Tsitsipas dominating the head to head 6-2. They have split the two matches this year, with Tsitsipas winning at the French Open in a five set thriller and Alexander Zverev winning in Acapulco. This match is just about dead even in my opinion, with the Greek clearly having the edge on the head to head but Zverev is in better form. It really can go either way, but I am going to back Alexander Zverev to get the win here. He is on a high after winning the Olympics, and it is hard to look past him after that dominant win over Ruud. He has been serving extremely well, and if that continues I think that he should have just enough to get past the world number three. Expect a three set thriller, with the German advancing to the Final here at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
