TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as John Millman meets Jack Sock in the First Round on Friday October 8th, 2021.
An interesting match is expected as the unseeded duo of John Millman and local favorite Jack Sock square off for a spot in the Second Round of the 2021 Indian Wells Open. They have contrasting styles, with the Australian being ultra calm and consistent, and the American being very dynamic, attacking at every opportunity. Who will get the win here and advance?
John Millman is unseeded here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked #58 in the world. Due to his opponent’s struggles over the past few years with injuries, he is ranked over 100 spots higher than the American and will be hoping to take full advantage here. The veteran Aussie has a reputation of being one of the toughest and most hardworking players on the Tour, and his consistent game style is sure to cause the erratic Jack Sock some issues here. However, he has been having a poor season by his high standards, dropping out the top 50 for the first time in a while and he will be eager to go on a run here on his preferred hard court surface. There have been some good results, but he will be hoping for the type of consistency that he was known for a few years ago.
Jack Sock was given a Wild Card to this event, as his ranking of #162 is not high enough for direct entry. Once ranked inside the top 10, the American saw his ranking plummet outside the top 200, and he has had a long and difficult journey to where he is now. After grinding through a few Challengers at the start of his comeback, he had some notable results such as a run to the Quarter-Finals at the Newport Open, and defeating top 50 player Alexander Bublik en route to the Third Round at the US Open. His strengths remain his huge serve and forehand, but his movement is not what it once was and his backhand is a massive weakness. While John Millman is the favorite here due to his much superior ranking, the American has much ore firepower and may be inspired by the home crowd here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I am expecting an extremely close and exciting match. The men have very contrasting styles, and the offense of Sock will be perfectly balanced by the consistency and defense of John Millman. While it is difficult to pick a winner here, the Aussie has not been as sharp as he has been in recent times and I think that Sock can take full advantage. His forehand is a fearsome weapon, and with his confidence improving every day, I believe that he will be overpower his opponent here. It won’t be easy and will go the distance, but Jack Sock will win here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
