Washington Open 2021: Kei Nishikori vs. Lloyd Harris Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Kei Nishikori takes on Lloyd Harris in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, August 6th, 2021.

Will Lloyd Harris shock us all again as he aims to cause another upset by beating an experienced and successful opponent in Kei Nishikori to get into the Semi-Finals? Will Kei Nishikori take advantage of the opportunity to go further here in the 2021 Washington Open as he does not have to meet Rafael Nadal? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will reach the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?

Lloyd Harris shocked the world on Thursday night, defeating the title favourite and the player everyone came to see, Rafael Nadal, in 3 sets 6-4/1-6/6-4. Nadal was not at his best during the match as we saw that foot injury which plagued him both at the French Open and in his match against Jack Sock get even worse. This allowed Lloyd Harris to be more confident in his groundstrokes because Nadal was not moving at his best around the court. If Nadal was fully fit, there would have been no chance Lloyd wins, but he was not and Lloyd took advantage. Now, the big swinging South African meets another experienced and tough opponent in Kei Nishikori. Can he cause another upset at the 2021 Washington Open?

Kei Nishikori put on a solid comeback win against Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16, beating the Brit in 3 sets 3-6/6-3/6-3. Kei Nishikori did not let himself down as it seemed like Cameron would win this match, but he rather used his experience to just chip away at aspects of Cameron’s game until Kei started to dictate the rallies. Kei Nishikori will be ecstatic that he is not meeting Rafael Nadal in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Washington Open, but he will also know that he should not take Lloyd Harris as an easy opponent as he just proved he is not one of those players.

Kei Nishikori and Lloyd Harris have met 1 time before, with Lloyd Harris leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year at the Dubai Open where Harris won in 3 tight sets. I think Harris was in better form back then and Kei is in better form now. Although Harris beat Nadal and shocked everyone, this was more due to Nadal not being at his best and injured. Kei Nishikori is fresh, continuously improving, and most likely determined to get revenge for that loss in Dubai earlier in the year. I expect a very tight match between these two, with key points dictating who wins the match, but I see Kei Nishikori coming out on top.
