Rome Open 2021: Alexander Zverev vs. Hugo Dellien Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Rome Open as Alexander Zverev (6) meets Hugo Dellien (Q) in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, May 12th, 2021.

Will Hugo Dellien get the biggest win of his career under his belt here on a surface which he very much enjoys playing on? Will Alexander Zverev come out of the gates dominating as he did all of last week at the 2021 Madrid Open, beating Nadal, Thiem, and Berrettini on his way to the title? This is definitely going to be an interesting match as the conditions at the 2021 Rome Open are very different than what they were in Madrid, so who will come out on top?

Hugo Dellien was able to come back from a set down in his Round of 64 match, beating Adrian Mannarino in 3 sets 2-6/7-5/6-2. That was a very hard fought victory, and Hugo Dellien showed great composure throughout the very tight moments. However, it was also handed to him somewhat from Mannarino who just did not stop hitting easy errors. Hugo Dellien will be happy, but also know that he will have to raise his level dramatically now as he meets the most in form player of the last week in Alexander Zverev, and he will be determined to continue his success going.

Alexander Zverev is coming off of his 4th Masters 1000 title after winning the 2021 Madrid Open, beating the likes of Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, and Matteo Berrettini in 3 days to claim the title. Alexander Zverev will be happy with his week there, but he will know that the conditions here at the 2021 Rome Open will be much different to the ones in Madrid as the court and the ball will not move around the court as if it were an indoor hard court tournament, where Zverev thrives. Alexander Zverev will be happy with his second round draw as he has a very unknown player in Hugo Dellien, but he shouldn’t take things too lightly.

Alexander Zverev and Hugo Dellien have met 1 time before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. They met on clay in Geneva in 2019, where Zverev won in 3 tight sets 7-5/3-6/6-3. Hugo Dellien was in amazing form in the 2019 clay court season, but he has gone downhill since then, whilst Zverev has risen to his peak on clay this year. I expect for this to be a good match, just because the conditions are different to Madrid, but Zverev should make his way to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Rome Open.
