Paris Masters 2021: Aslan Karatsev vs. Sebastian Korda Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Aslan Karatsev takes on Sebastian Korda in the Round of 64 on Monday, November 1st, 2021.

Will Aslan Karatsev round off a stellar year by returning to winning ways at the 2021 Paris Masters? Or will Sebastian Korda throw a spanner in the works and halt the Russian’s charge? We preview an intriguing first round match from Bercy which has a lot in store.

Aslan Karatsev failed in his bid to win back-to-back titles on home soil last week. After capturing the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, the 28-year-old was stunned by John Millman in the Round of 16 at the St. Petersburg Open. That result, however, does not tarnish the good work that Karatsev has produced throughout 2021. From virtually on the fringes of the main tour earlier this year, Karatsev has broken a new barrier and cracked the world’s Top 20 for the first time. In a season of thrills and highs, and which began at the Australian Open, the expectation is that Karatsev will look to a put a seal in a grand manner.

But things don’t get any easier for the Russian star. He has been handed a tough draw ahead of his debut appearance at the 2021 Paris Masters. Karatsev will renew his rivalry with USA’s fast-rising star Sebastian Korda. Korda remains a bright prospect in the upcoming seasons with game that embodies his stature. A potent first serve, a bludgeoning forehand and a solid backhand. Pretty much all the basics done right. But what typifies Korda’s impressive evolution is his mental fortitude notwithstanding his age. He has already captured an ATP Tour title on the clay courts of Parma and remains a daunting opponent in the early rounds of tournaments.

Sebastian Korda holds a 1-0 advantage over Aslan Karatsev in their head-to-head tour level meetings. The lanky American won that match at the Miami Masters earlier this season by a jaw-dropping scoreline 6-3 6-0. But I expect this to be fiercely contested. Karatsev was a spent force in St. Petersburg, but has had enough time to recharge his batteries and soak in his latest title win. Korda also famously defeated the Russian in the qualifying rounds of the French Open, clearly implicating that it is a very challenging matchup for Karatsev. But given how Korda’s form has fallen off a cliff since Wimbledon, I think Karatsev will have too much nous and durability to withstand Korda’s aggression.
