TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Lorenzo Sonego takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, September 28th, 2021.
Will Lorenzo Sonego move on? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a close matchup. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 San Diego Open?
Nikoloz Basilashvili has been playing pretty good tennis, and he should be feeling pretty confident about taking this match here against Lorenzo Sonego. He defeated him at the Olympics, and he has a great game to beat him, he hits big from the back of the court, and when he’s on, he is one of the best players in the world. I think the match will mostly depend on whether or not he can serve well, and if he does, I think many opportunities will present themselves to him on Sonego’s serve. It will most certainly be a fun match, and it will be interesting to see whether or not Basilashvili can meet expectations and grab the win to head through here at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Lorenzo Sonego has simmered down since Wimbledon, struggling to win a match. So it will most certainly be a tough one ahead of him having to take on Nikoloz Basilashvili. I think he will have to serve really well and play as aggressively as possible, of course, this is much easier said than done. If he can get a consistent pattern going of forehand to forehand exchanges, I like his chances to take the match, however, I feel as if Basilashvili just has a much better backhand than him, and his forehand isn’t that much worse, so I do fully expect Basilashvili to take advantage of that fact and move on to the next round at the 2021 San Diego Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili and Lorenzo Sonego have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their most recent meeting was In Tokyo, where Basilashvili won in 3 sets, the court was playing very fast, and if Basilashvili was able to do that there, then I think he won’t have many problems doing that here. His backhand is simply much better, and I think he’ll be able to use it to win a lot of different exchanges, as well as having a superior return, he just has an edge in almost every area right now. Let’s see if he can play the way we know he can and take out Sonego to move through to the next round at the 2021 San Diego Open.
