TennisSection previews the 2021 Laver Cup as Alexander Zverev takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime on Day 3 on Sunday, September 26th, 2021.
Will Felix Auger-Aliassime get an early win for Team World to keep their 2021 Laver Cup victory hopes alive? Will Alexander Zverev seal the deal for Team Europe as he has done for the last 2 years of the Laver Cup? Both players know each other quite well, but only one will get their last win of the 2021 Laver Cup. Who will it be?
Felix Auger-Aliassime comes into this match after having lost such a tight match against Matteo Berrettini on Day 1 of the 2021 Laver Cup, losing 10-8 in the final set. Felix is so good in these indoor hard court conditions, and he will aim to get himself a victory here so that he at least contributes somewhat to Team World’s point total. This match will be heavily reliant on what happens in the doubles match beforehand, which if Team Europe win, they have already reached their points needed to win, and if Team World win, this match against Alexander Zverev will be big for Felix Auger-Aliassime to keep things alive.
Alexander Zverev fought through a very tight match against the huge server, John Isner, beating him in 3 sets 7-6/6-7/10-5. Alexander Zverev knows that if the doubles match beforehand goes the way of Team World, he is once again in the limelight to give Team Europe the win. Alexander won’t mind that as he has done that both in 2018 and 2019 where he won it for Team Europe. Alexander also loves playing in these conditions and he will know that he can definitely take Felix Auger-Aliassime on as he aims to give a great win here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime have met 4 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 3-1. They met this year at Wimbledon, where Felix won in 5 sets. That match was on grass, which suits Felix more. However, on hard courts, especially indoor hard courts, Alexander has much more of a chance for the win. Felix is good, but when it comes to top 5 players, he struggles against them. If Team Europe wins the doubles match beforehand, I expect for Felix to win just because Team Europe do not have much motivation, but if Team World win the doubles, then Alexander will get the job done here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
