TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021.
Will Jannik Sinner move on? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two next-gen stars with similar playstyles. Who will move onto the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Jannik Sinner got a day off as he heads into this matchup with Taylor Fritz. He showed a solid level of play in his first match, continuing his good run of form since defending his title in Sofia. He has a tough one ahead of him, Fritz pulled off a big win, and plays a somewhat similar style to Sinner, however, since that is the case, Sinner definitely holds the advantage. He hits bigger on a more consistent basis and makes more serves. I feel like Sinner will win a lot more rallies from the back of the court, as his balls are more consistently deep and flat, Fritz will struggle with this and won’t be able to generate as many opportunities to break. Let’s see if Sinner can carry on his brilliant form to head through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Taylor Fritz pulled off one of the biggest wins of his career, taking out Berrettini in straights. He now has yet another tough matchup ahead of him in Jannik Sinner. Sinner has been playing great tennis, in order to take him out, Fritz will need to focus on returning big, Sinner will likely serve a lot more consistently than him, so Fritz will have to try and pound the second serve returns for any hope of generating opportunities to break. Simply due to the level which he exhibited against Berrettini, and due to the inconsistencies that Sinner can still have mentally, I do think that Fritz has a very good shot at grabbing a set and taking this match the distance, however, Sinner is ultimately playing at a much higher level and will most likely come out on top in this tight matchup for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. This is an entertaining matchup, with both players having a similar playstyle. They both have solid serves and potential at the net, with pretty decent movement but most importantly, they both hit huge groundstrokes from the back of the court. Sinner however, is able to simply make more balls and is able to redirect a lot more of his shots. He is also able to play more aggressively and cut off the angles, which is not something that Fritz is yet able to do on a consistent basis. WIth the level that Sinner has shown as of late, I expect him to tough this one out and move on here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
