TennisSection previews the 2021 Davis Cup Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, December 4th, 2021.
Will Jan-Lennard Struff come out here and get another big win under his belt as he continues to be the anchor for Team Germany? Will Daniil Medvedev continue cruising through opponents as he aims to get into the Final? Both players are big hitters and have great serves, but only one will get the point for their team at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. Who will it be?
Jan-Lennard Struff put on a great performance against the incredibly tough and in form, Cameron Norrie, beating the Brit in 3 sets. Jan-Lennard was on top of both his serve and his forehand, with his movement coming out in good form which allowed him to not lose some easy points. Jan-Lennard Struff has been pivotal for Team Germany as their No.1 player here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals, but if he is now able to get the win against Daniil Medvedev, this would be the biggest win of his career.
Another match, another straight sets win for Daniil Medvedev here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals. Medvedev beat Mikael Ymer in two easy sets in the Quarter-Finals, not wasting any time and getting the Semi-Finals spot booked for Team Russia. Daniil Medvedev is in cruise control here and he will know that if he continues to play with this momentum and domination he will be well placed for the start of the 2022 season. However, Medvedev meets one of his toughest opponents at this tournament in Jan-Lennard Struff so he cannot take anything lightly.
Daniil Medvedev and Jan-Lennard Struff have met 7 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 5-2. They met twice this year, both times on grass, with each player getting a win against the other. Before that, they had met 3 times on indoor hard courts where Medvedev won 2 out of the 3 matches. Because of their entertaining and tight encounters earlier this year, I do expect a tight match, but you also have to remember that grass is well suited for Struff’s game style, whilst Medvedev is more suited to these indoor hard court conditions. Perhaps we will see one or two tiebreaks, but I expect Medvedev to get it done in 2 sets nonetheless here at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals.
