Roland Garros 2021: Daniil Medvedev vs. Tommy Paul Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Tommy Paul in the Second Round on Wednesday June 2nd, 2021.

Can second seeded Daniil Medvedev claim the second victory of his French Open career? Or will the impressive American Tommy Paul cause the upset here at the 2021 French Open? Both men registered impressive victories in the opening round and will be ready and rearing to go here. Who will get the win and advance to the Third Round?

Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings and is also the second seed here at the 2021 French Open. The Russian star has been one of the standout players on tour over the past few seasons, but his clay court record has been dismal to say the least. He went on record saying that his goal was to simply win one match here at Roland Garros 2021, a feat that he achieved with his impressive win over Alexander Bublik. Medvedev is not a serious contender for the title here in Paris but he is certainly good enough to get through the first few rounds, however he will face the dangerous American Tommy Paul in Round two. Paul is very comfortable on clay, and this will be a stern test for Medvedev here as he attempts to advance to the Third Round.

Tommy Paul is unseeded here at the 2021 French Open, and is currently ranked #52 in the ATP world rankings. Paul is one of the few Americans that have had success on clay, and considers this his favorite surface. He has been having a good year thus far, and finds himself at a career-high ranking. Surprisingly, he was pushed to the limit in his First Round win over Christopher O’Connell, a match he was expected to win easily. The American was cruising after winning the first two sets very easily, but then a lapse in focus caused him to lose the next two, digging himself into a deep hole. Paul eventually won 10-8 in the Fifth, but will not have been happy with that performance. Also, fatigue is not a good thing to have when facing the world number two Daniil Medvedev, and Paul enters this match as the underdog.

This will be the first time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This is a tough match to call because of the surface that it is on. If it was being played on hard courts, it would be a straightforward win for Daniil Medvedev. The Russian is one of the most talented players in the world but struggles on clay for some reason. Despite his recent poor clay form, I am going to back Daniil Medvedev to win a tough match here at the 2021 French Open. Tommy Paul is likely going to be fatigued after his marathon five setter, and I don’t think he has enough left in the tank to get the win here. Medvedev can be a good player on clay when he is focused, and that seems to be the case here. I expect him to win this match in four sets, advancing to the Third Round here at Roland Garros 2021.
