TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as Reilly Opelka (4) meets Taylor Fritz (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday July 30th, 2021.
An exciting “All-American” match is expected as the big-serving duo of Reilly Opelka and Taylor Fritz do battle for a spot in the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. Both men are extremely aggressive players and this match will be full of flashy shot making and huge serving. They have been in poor form lately and will both be eager to reach their first ATP Semi-Final in quite some time, who has what it takes to get the win and advance here?
Reilly Opelka is currently ranked #36 in the ATP world rankings and is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. The American had a career year last season, but has found the going tough in 2021 thus far. Currently boasting a losing record of 8-12 on the year, he will be delighted to have found some form here and will be very eager to reach the Semi-Finals for the second time in 2021 after a surprising run at the Italian Open. He overcame a tough challenge from fellow American Bjorn Fratangelo, setting up this clash with Taylor Fritz. As always, he was heavily reliant on his serve in his 7-6, 7-6 victory, serving 5 aces and will be hoping for more of the same against Fitz.
Taylor Fritz is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #42 on the ATP Tour. Like his opponent Reilly Opelka, Fritz’s main weapon is his big serve, although he is more well-rounded than Opelka. After cruising past Evgeny Donskoy in the First Round, he was pushed to the limit by fellow American Steve Johnson in the Round of 16, eventually winning in three sets in over two hours. His serve was outstanding in that match, serving 17 acres and winning an astonishing 90% of his first serve points. He will need to be at his best against Opelka here as he knows that breaking serve will be a big struggle.
This will be the sixth meeting between the two players with Taylor Fritz dominating the head to head 4-1. This is a tough match to predict with both men being in poor form this year, and not convincing with their performances so far here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. All things considered, I am going with Taylor Fritz to get the close win here. He is more well-rounded than his opponent Reilly Opelka, and is not quite as heavily reliant on his serve. He has been returning very well so far, and if he is able to get a couple breaks then he should be able to come through this match. It will be very close with a lot of aces and short points, but give me Taylor Fritz to get the win and advance to the Semis here in Atlanta.
