Moselle Open 2021: Hubert Hurkacz vs. Pablo Carreno Busta Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Hubert Hurkacz (1) meets Pablo Carreno Busta (2) in the Final on Sunday September 26th, 2021.

A tense and exciting encounter is expected here as the top two seeds do battle in the Final of the 2021 Moselle Open. Both men are seeking to win their third title of the year as they try to end 2021 on a high. Hubert Hurkacz has had a breakout season this year and has established himself as one of the top players in world tennis, while PCB is a highly respected player who has been in the top 20 for many years. It seems to be very evenly matched with both men having a good shot at capturing the title, who will win and claim the title here in Metz, France?

Hubert Hurkacz is the top seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #13 on the ATP Tour. The Polish star has been enjoying a breakout season this year where he won his first ATP-1000 title and reached his first Grand Slam Semi-Final. Since Wimbledon he has been quite inconsistent and will be looking to rectify that as he seeks to break into the top 10 which is within touching distance. A win here would bring him closer to that goal, and he has be simply dominant this week, defeating Lucas Pouille, Andy Murray and Peter Gojowczyk all in straight sets. He was made to work harder than expected by Gojowczyk in the Semis but kept his nerve to win a tight contest 6-4, 7-6. The number one seed is the favorite here against second seeded Pablo Carreno Busta but knows that he will have to be at his best to defeat the highly experienced Spaniard. He will be looking to his serve and big groundstrokes to carry him through here, and he will also have to try to keep the error count low as his opponent is one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour.

Pablo Carreno Busta is currently ranked #16 on the ATP Tour and is the second seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The Spaniard has been one of the most consistent performers over the past few years, and is normally a staple in the top 10. However, inconsistent performances have seen his ranking plummet, and while he has two titles for the year he would not consider it a successful one. A strong run to the Final here will have given him some much needed confidence, and he will be backing himself to overcome the sometime erratic Hubert Hurkacz in Sunday’s Final. He was tested in both the Quarters and the Semis by Holger Rune and Gael Monfils respectively, but will have been delighted to dig deep and get the wins. If he plays to his best then he has a very strong chance of winning here, but he must be considered the underdog here due to the quicker surface and his opponent’s ultra-powerful game.

This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head by 1-0. He won their only meeting in two intense tiebreakers in Cincinnati, and will be hoping for a repeat performance. However, his opponent Hubert Hurkacz has been in incredible form here at the 2021 Moselle Open and will be very tough to beat, especially given the fast indoor surface that they will be playing on. His serve is a major weapon, and if that is clicking he will be almost impossible to break. Despite not having as many weapons as Hurkacz, PCB is one of the best movers on the ATP Tour and is known for his fighting spirit, so this match is looking like a very close and intense one. All things considered, I am going to back Hurkacz to win here. I think that he simply has too much firepower for his opponent here, and when he is serving well and confident there are not many that can defeat him. It very likely will go the distance, but Hubert Hurkacz will win here, becoming the 2021 Moselle Open champion.
