TennisSection previews the 2021 Queen’s Open as Aslan Karatsev (5) meets Cameron Norrie in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, June 16th 2021.
Will Cameron Norrie put on another strong performance as he looks to continue impressing his fellow British fans? Will Aslan Karatsev find his feet on his first ever main tour grass court campaign as he aims to continue rising up the rankings and making a name for himself? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Queen’s Open. Who will it be?
Cameron Norrie got revenge for his loss to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the Final of Estoril earlier this year by beating him in the Round of 32 here at the 2021 Queen’s Open 4-6/6-3/6-4. Cameron Norrie is a left hander and when you pair that with the low bouncing conditions of grass courts, players have a tougher time returning his forehand from their backhand side. Cameron Norrie will want to master this here at Queen’s, and he would have if he met one of the many lower ranked opponents in the draw, however, he meets one of the tougher opponents in Aslan Karatsev.
Aslan Karatsev also had to come back from a set down in the Round of 32, beating the lucky loser Alejandro Tabilo in 3 sets 3-6/6-4/6-2. The first set was a way for Aslan Karatsev to get used to the low bouncing conditions of grass courts as he has never played an ATP Tour tournament on grass. Once he got used to this, Aslan turned on the jets and cruised through the remainder of the match. Aslan will now have to ensure he is ready to be at his best on his backhand side if he is to come through the tough Brit, Cameron Norrie, if he is to continue preparing himself for more grass tournaments.
Aslan Karatsev and Cameron Norrie have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. They both had to fight in comeback victories in the Round of 32 of the 2021 Queen’s Open, but I think that Aslan Karatsev will be in better form coming into this match. Aslan Karatsev is so powerful and he does not care of whoever his opponent is on the other side of the court. Cameron is solid, and might take a set, but Aslan has been able to have a spectacular season this year, and he will get some good matches on grass under his belt to prepare himself for Wimbledon at the end of the month.
