TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Alex de Minaur (4) faces Marcos Giron in the Round of 16 on Thursday September 23rd, 2021.
Fourth seeded Aussie Alex de Minaur will meet the unseeded Marcos Giron of the United States for a place in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Moselle Open. de Minaur has been in very poor form lately so he will be very eager to get back to winning ways here in Metz. Giron has been quietly having a good season in 2021 and is not to be underestimated. Neither player has had much success on indoor courts throughout their careers so this is poised to be a fairly even match given their respective forms. Can the unfancied American cause the upset? Or will de Minaur advance to the Quarter-Finals as expected?
Alex de Minaur is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #21 on the ATP Tour. The Aussie has built a reputation of one of the hardest working and fastest players on Tour, and despite his small stature has been very successful throughout his career. However, since winning the Eastbourne title a few months ago he has been on a brutal losing streak, winning just one match in his past six tournaments. He will be desperate to find form here in Metz to finish the year on a high, and has been handed a good draw here as he will face Marcos Giron in the Round of 16. While the American is a solid player, he does not have the weapons that are usually needed when playing de Minaur, as it is often necessary to overpower or hit through him. de Minaur is very strong and consistent on both wings and has a massive work rate, and will be looking to these things to get him through to the Quarter-Finals here.
Marcos Giron is currently ranked #66 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The American has been having a solid season for the most part, but has struggled to string together consistent results. His last event was the US Open where he reached the Second Round, and he will be eager to continue building on his career best season and finish the year strongly. He has been handed a tough draw here against Alex de Minaur, but will be heartened by the fact that his opponent, while ranked much higher than he is, is currently in very poor form. However, it remains to be seen if he will have the firepower needed to trouble the Aussie on these quicker courts. de Minaur is an elite defensive player and counterpuncher, so without the ability to hit through him, Giron may struggle. He is the clear underdog here, but given the Aussie’s form, Giron should not be counted out.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head being tied 1-1. Giron won their first meeting in 2019 in a huge upset, before de Minaur settled the score 6-3, 6-0 last year in Antwerp. Interestingly, that win was on indoor hard courts, similar to the ones here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The Aussie would normally be expected to win this quite easily, but he is hard to trust given his recent struggles. However, I do think that he possesses enough quality to get through here, especially given the fact that the surface does not suit his opponent Marcos Giron. He may start slowly, but Alex de Minaur will win in straight sets here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Moselle Open.
