TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Lorenzo Sonego (5) faces Holger Rune in the Round of 16 on Wednesday September 22nd, 2021.
An exciting match is expected here in the Round of 16 of the 2021 Moselle Open as fifth seeded Lorenzo Sonego of Italy meets Danish teenage sensation Holger Rune for a spot in the Quarter-Finals. Both men have been simply outstanding so far here in Metz and will have their eyes set on a deep run here. The Italian has established himself as one of the top players in the world with some strong performances over the past few seasons, while Rune is considered a top prospect for the future who has been leaping up the rankings lately. Does he have what it takes to cause yet another upset in his young career?
Lorenzo Sonego is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #24 on the ATP Tour. The 26 year old Italian has come out of nowhere lately, and has had some very strong performances over the past couple years, establishing himself as a true emerging talent. After some good results to start the year he has been in rather inconsistent form, notably reaching the Final in Eastbourne and the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, but lost in the First Round of the US Open. While he prefers clay to the quicker surfaces he has shown that he is a very capable player, as evidenced by his 6-3, 6-2 win over Marton Fucsovics in the First Round. It was a clinical display of tennis from Sonego, and he cruised to victory in a match that could have been very tough. He enters this match against Holger Rune as the massive favorite, but shouldn’t underestimate the youngster as he is in very good form at the moment.
Holger Rune is ranked #133 on the ATP Tour and has been having a solid second half of the season so far, performing very well on the Challenger Tour and notably winning a set off eventual Finalist and world number one Novak Djokovic at the US Open. The young Dane started solidly here at the 2021 Moselle Open, defeating veterans Thomas Fabbiano and Phillip Kohlschreiber in three sets in the Qualifying Rounds and backed that performance up in the First Round, crushing Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-0, 6-0. While the Spaniard is not comfortable on the indoor hard surface and was a late entrant due to the withdrawal of Alexei Popyrin, it was still a shocking performance and should not be ignored. “Double bagels” are very rare on the professional circuit and with that remarkable performance he will have given himself a lot of belief that he can upset his next opponent Lorenzo Sonego.
This will be the first match between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very exciting one regardless of the outcome. Lorenzo Sonego is the obvious favorite here due to his massive edge in experience at this level, but Holger Rune put in a breathtaking performance in the First Round and must be given a punter’s chance. In this type of form I think that the young Dane can keep it close, but it is unlikely that he can sustain it long enough to pull off the victory. Lorenzo Sonego is simply the better player at the moment, and while Rune has been impressive over the past few weeks, he still needs a bit more experience at this level to add to his big game to be able to consistently compete at this level. Expect a very high quality match, with the Italian winning in two tough sets, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Moselle Open.
