TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Iga Swiatek takes on Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16 on Monday, September 6th, 2021.
Which of these two exciting young talents will come through this entertaining match to get themselves into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open? Will it be the Grand Slam winning Iga Swiatek, or will it be the Gold medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Belinda Bencic? Both of them have the skills to get the job done, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Belinda Bencic cruised through her Round of 32 match against the local American, Jessica Pegula, in straight sets 6-2/6-4. Belinda Bencic will be very happy with that win because she did not let herself take a break at any time throughout the match even when she was in the lead. This strong mentality is something which we have been long awaiting from the Swiss after her injuries, and we are so glad that it has come out again in the last few months. Belinda has a great all round game, but in this match she will want to ensure her serve is firing as she meets the great returner who is Iga Swiatek here at the 2021 US Open.
Iga Swiatek came through a hard-thought match against a player she had a losing record to, Anett Kontaveit, getting the job done in 3 sets 3-6/6-4/3-6. Iga Swiatek showed her resilience in that match because Anett is a player who knows how to beat Iga, but the Pole ensured she got off to a good start and got an early lead, giving her more confidence in holding her nerve when the going got tough. Iga is a more naturally gifted clay court player, but she will be looking at this side of the draw knowing that if she ends up beating Belinda Bencic, she has a very good chance of going all the way to the Final here at the 2021 US Open as Ashleigh Barty has been eliminated.
Iga Swiatek and Belinda Bencic have met 1 time before, with Iga Swiatek leading the head to head 1-0. They met earlier this year in similar conditions in the Final of Adelaide. Iga won that match easily in straight sets. Since then, Belinda has improved drastically as she has won big titles and gotten herself back close to where she used to be. I expect a tighter match as a result of this, and I expect for both players to grab a set. However, due to the prior meeting, Iga Swiatek will be much more confident in this match, and she will know that she can play her best game, as she has a solid serve, and she is a great returner against Bencic’s mediocre serve. I expect the Pole to make her way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.
