Will Jannik Sinner get himself into yet another second week of a Grand Slam at the age of 20? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Gael Monfils thought through a very entertaining 4-set match against the American Steve Johnson, beating him 7-5/4-6/6-4/6-4. Gael Monfils is going to be very happy with the fact he has been able to play his best tennis recently, with his health being fine and his injuries not seeming to be hurting him. However, he will also know that he has not met anyone really tough to beat so far at the 2021 US Open. Gael would love to make it into the second week here as he will know that he can gain even more momentum for the rest of his season if he does so, but he will have to come through the very tough Jannik Sinner.
Jannik Sinner also came through a 4-set win against an American in the Round of 64, beating Zachary Svajda 6-3/7-6/6-7/6-4. Jannik should have really won that match in straight sets, but Zachary was able to maintain his composure to get that third set under his belt, and Jannik had to get it done in 4. Jannik is a great player, but he will know that he cannot afford to lose sets against easy opponents because it will hurt his confidence and help the confidence of his future opponents, such as Gael Monfils, here at the 2021 US Open.
Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met both times in 2019, where Monfils was at a much higher level than now and Sinner was at a much lower level. Sinner is so hard to beat nowadays, with a great all round game. Monfils is definitely still good, but he has not really met anyone tough. I expect for a Jannik Sinner win here because he is able to rally very long and maintain long shots, whilst Monfils will aim to finish points quickly and will most likely hit errors. Monfils will still get a couple sets under his belt I think because of the fact that Sinner lost a set to Zachary here at the 2021 US Open.
