TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Alexander Zverev (4) meets Taylor Fritz (31) in the Round of 32 on Saturday, July 3rd 2021.
Will Taylor Fritz come out here after such a tough Round of 64 match and have enough left to cause the huge upset? Will Alexander Zverev continue to cruise through his matches here as he aims to make his first ever deep run at Wimbledon. If both players are at their best, we are definitely in for a tight encounter, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16. Who will it be?
Taylor Fritz had to fight right until the end in his Round of 64 match, beating his fellow American Steve Johnson in 5 sets 6-4/7-6/4-6/6-7/6-4. It seemed as if Taylor had the match under control for the first two sets and a half, but then Johnson began dictating play once Fritz let his guard down. Although Fritz still came out with the win in the end, he will be very displeased that he wasted so much energy on court when he should have won easily. He will now have to recover a lot as he will meet an even tougher opponent in Alexander Zverev in the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Alexander Zverev cruised through his match against Tennys Sandgren in the Round of 64, beating the American in straight sets 7-5/6-2/6-3. This is some great tennis we are seeing from Zverev who has never had success here at Wimbledon. Alexander Zverev seems to be feeling well both on his serve and forehand which give him the confidence to go for shots that he would usually be scared to hit. If this version of Zverev continues to come out and play, and perhaps slightly improves his net game, I am sure he will have a very good time against Taylor Fritz at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz have met 3 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 2-1. They last met in 2019 in Basel where Fritz won 7-6/6-4. They also met here at Wimbledon in 2018 in a 5-set thriller which Zverev won. Although Fritz won their last match, and the match before that went to 5-sets, I see Zverev coming out of this one on top. If Fritz had not given up that 2-0 lead against Johnson I could perhaps see him taking this to 5 sets, but with his lack of consistency throughout that match I only see him stealing one set. Zverev will still come out on top and make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
