Adelaide 2 Open 2022: Corentin Moutet vs. Thiago Monteiro Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open as Corentin Moutet takes on Thiago Monteiro in the quarterfinal on Thursday, January 13th, 2022.

Corentin Moutet appears to be a rejuvenated man. After last week’s default for berating the chair umpire, Moutet has played some fine tennis to reach the last eight at the Adelaide 2 Open. But can he succeed where his other French compatriot failed when he meets Thiago Monteiro?

Corentin Moutet’s level has gone up a notch since he scaled the qualifying rounds of the Adelaide 2 Open. Moutet has defied the odds for the second match running in the main draw. He backed up his first-round win over Jan-Lennard Struff with an even better performance to defeat the eighth-seeded Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. The French lefty won 6-2 6-2 in just 76 minutes of play. Moutet’s forehand ground strokes suffocated Fuscovics, who did not have breathing space from the baseline. A flurry of winners and crisp hitting tore the Hungarian’s gameplan to shreds. Next up will be Thiago Monteiro.

Thiago Monteiro, meanwhile, reached the quarterfinals of the Adelaide 2 Open under the unlikeliest of circumstances. Monteiro was playing the reigning Adelaide 1 champion Gael Monfils in the Round of 16, and had dropped the first set in a tiebreak. Instead of throwing in the towel, he kept pummeling the defenses of Monfils tirelessly. The Frenchman’s body gave in, and he ceded the second set. At the start of third, the top seed was clearly hampered and retired due to back injury. Monteiro therefore, had a straight ticket to the last eight.

Corentin Moutet leads Thiago Monteiro 1-0 on the ATP Tour, winning their meeting at the Cordoba Open in 2020 in straight sets. While the hard courts of the Adelaide 2 Open will favor the Frenchman heavily in Thursday’s contest, Monteiro’s chances cannot be overlooked. The Brazilian southpaw is slowly forging a reputation as an all-court threat. I reckon this match could go the distance, and I am tipping the Frenchman to move into the semifinals due to his superior record on the surface.
