Dominic Thiem has won two matches at the Estoril Oepn, which is more than what he garnered in his last eight tournaments combined. He is into his first quarterfinal of the season and although this run is great for his wavering confidence, he will to step up big time on Friday against the in-form Quentin Halys.

Quentin Halys, for his part, continued to conjure the surprises. He notched his 15th win of the season by upsetting Spain’s fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6, 7-5, hammering 14 aces and winning an incredible 82% first-serve points. Halys has now each of his last four matches as the underdog, and he’ll have that tag when he plays Dominic Thiem on Friday.

Dominic Thiem and Quentin Halys have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this quarterfinal match at the Estoril Open being their first meeting. Thiem came to the Portuguese Riviera this week needing results more than performances. But victory over Ben Shelton was win-win on both fronts for Thiem will be ecstatic, but that doesn’t really solve all his problems, its a start though. There’s been tight matches where he was the dominant player, but he still ended up on the losing side. I think he can attest that his confidence took a hit and his game completely malfunctioned. But I’m not convinced he can handle the first-strike tennis that Halys has orchestrated this week. The Frenchman is not allowing his opponents any breathing space, with his bullet-proof serve a major weapon in his arsenal. At the rate at which Thiem takes his chances, it may mean he could run out of them against a clinical Halys.
