TennisSection previews the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as Alexander Zverev (5) meets David Goffin (11) in the Round of 16 on Thursday April 15th, 2021.
A very interesting Round of 16 match awaits us at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters event in Monaco. Fifth seeded German Alexander Zverev will face eleventh seeded David Goffin of Belgium in a battle between two of the best players in the world. They are both highly experienced and will be looking forward to this one. Will Zverev be able to hold his nerve and advance to the Quarter-Finals as expected? Or will the veteran Goffin cause the upset?
Alexander Zverev is currently ranked #6 in the ATP world rankings and has established himself firmly in the top 10 for quite some time now. The German has been having a very inconsistent 2021 season, and will be hoping for a deep run here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters to get his season back on track. He defeated Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in the Second Round, but did not impress much, struggling with his serve as usual and allowing his opponent back into the match from a commanding position. However, he will have been pleased to have gotten the win over an in-form opponent, and will be confident heading into this match. He will have to be much better against a very capable and experienced player in David Goffin if he wants to advance here.
David Goffin is currently ranked #15 in the ATP world rankings and is a former top 10 player. Like his opponent Alexander Zverev, the Belgian has also been having an inconsistent season, winning one title in Lyon paired with a string of early round losses. A former Semi-Finalist here in Monaco, Goffin is a very capable and experienced player, with all the tools to cause the upset here. He has struggled with form and confidence over the past few years, but has been impressive so far here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating Marin Cilic in the First Round and dismantling Marco Cecchinato 6-4, 6-0 in the Second Round. When he is confident he can be very difficult to beat, and he will be backing himself to win here against the struggling German.
The two players have faced each other three times before on the ATP Tour, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head series 2-1. Interestingly, all three times that they have played has gone the distance. There is nothing to suggest anything different here, with both players looking good so far here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. This is a very difficult match to predict, so the safest play might be to pick each player to win a set. All things considered, I am going with Alexander Zverev to get the win here over David Goffin. He just has a little extra gear that the Belgian does not, and he has more firepower which could be the difference here. If he is confident and serving well, it will be difficult for Goffin to stop him here. Zverev will win a tight contest and advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
