TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas (3) meets Adrian Mannarino in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
Can Stefanos Tsitsipas keep the momentum going as he continues in search of his first Grand Slam title? The Greek superstar is one of the main contenders for the title here at the 2021 US Open Championships but is off to an unconvincing start. Can he right the ship and get a comfortable victory here against Adrian Mannarino? Or will the veteran Frenchman prove to be a worthy opponent and cause the huge upset here in New York?
Stefanos Tsitsipas is the third seed here at the 2021 US Open and is also ranked at a career-high #3 in the world rankings. The Greek superstar has had a breakout year so far in 2021, winning his first ATP-1000 title in Monte-Carlo and reaching his maiden Grand Slam Final at Roland Garros. Along with Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev he is considered the main threat to stop Novak Djokovic from winning the title here and if he is playing well he is certainly capable of winning it all here. However, he was pushed to the limit in the First Round by Andy Murray and can consider himself lucky to have won the match after being down set points in the second set before recovering to win in five. Tsitsipas really raised his level in the final two sets to seal the victory but knows that he will have to be better if he is to make a deep run here, as a better opponent would have made him pay. He will be hoping to have a much easier time against his next opponent Adrian Mannarino and is the big favorite to advance.
Adrian Mannarino is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #44 in the world. The Frenchman is a very solid player but one that lacks a true weapon that is needed to defeat the top players such as his next opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas. Without those weapons he will be depending on his opponent to give him free points, something that does not happen often at this level. Like Tsitsipas, Adrian Mannarino was pushed to five sets in the First Round, defeating countryman Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a thrilling win. The Frenchman had to fight back from two sets to love down. Notably, the fact that he also played five sets took away the only possible advantage that he could have over the heavily favored Tsitsipas, if he was fresher and fitter. Since they both have been on court for a similar amount of time, there is no advantage to be had and Mannarino is the heavy underdog in this Second Round encounter.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head series being deadlocked at 1-1. Both of their matches were in 2019 but their careers have been vastly different since then. Adrian Mannarino has maintained his ranking at around 40-50 for the past few years, but Tsitsipas has truly become a global superstar, and is one of the best players in the world. I expect this to be a straightforward win for the Greek star, who will be grateful to get some rest ahead of a potential deep run here. Stefanos Tsitsipas will win in straight sets, advancing to the Third Round of the 2021 US Open.
