TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as AndreyRublev takes on Marton Fucsovics in the quarterfinal on Friday, February 11th, 2022.
Andrey Rublev remains on course to defend his Rotterdam Open title when he takes a familiar opponent in Marton Fucsovics. The Russian has won four of their last five meetings including last year’s final at this tournament. So Fucsovics should have an eye for revenge.
Andrey Rublev extended his winning streak at the Rotterdam Open to seven matches. He defeated fast-rising South Korean Soonwoo Kwon 6-3 6-3 in 79 minutes to set up another showdown against good friend Marton Fucsovics. Rublevadmitted victory over Kwon was not as straightforward as the scoreline suggested. Kwon’s biggest asset is overpowering his opponents from the baseline. And from the first point the two players would engage in high intensity rallies. But Rublevproved a tad too good in that department as he finished off forehands with his outstanding power. Rublev has only droppedone set in his last seven matches in Rotterdam, so it will take something extra special to wrestle the title away from him.
It is 2022, but Marton Fuscovics cannot avoid Andrey Rublev in main draw meetings. Last year they met five times, with Rublevwinning in four (one walkover). But the Hungarian exercised a herculean effort at Wimbledon last summer as he came from the brink of defeat to stun the Russian in five sets in the fourth round. Fucsovics has now made the quarterfinals or better at the Rotterdam Open in three of his four visits at the tournament. He ended Tallon Griekspoor’s fairytale run at his home tournament with a 6-4 7-6 win. The match featured just one break of serve.
Andrey Rublev leads Marton Fucsovics 4-2 in their head-to-head meetings at tour level. Rublev will be an overwhelming favorite to defeat the Hungarian once more. The Russian is in the zone right now as he continues to protect his fine record at the Rotterdam Open. Fucsovics’ serve was almost impregnable in his win over Griekspoor, nullifying the two break points he faced in the match. But Rublev’s aggression should keep him off balance and will likely cause Fucsovics’ serve to malfunction. With that said, I like the Russian’s chances of advancing into the semis.
