TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Karolina Pliskova (4) meets Caty McNally in the First Round on Tuesday August 31st, 2021.
Fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova is one of the favorites to win the title here at the 2021 US Open and the Czech star will be looking to put her past Grand Slam demons behind her as she searches for a maiden Major title. The former world number one has a reputation of struggling to cope with the pressure at the big events, and it is rather surprising that she has not won a Slam yet. First up for her will be local favorite Caty McNally who has had a lot of success on the doubles tour which is yet to translate to the singles events. Can the young American cause the shocking upset and send the fourth seed packing?
Karolina Pliskova is a former world number one who currently finds herself at #4 in the WTA rankings. She is the fourth seed here at the 2021 US Open and despite her traditional struggles at Grand Slam events is one of the major contenders for the title here in New York. After a very poor start to the year she has turned her season around, notably reaching her maiden Wimbledon Final, the Final in Montreal and the Semis in Cincinnati. Pliskova in good form on hard courts is a bad sign for the rest of the field, and she is certainly capable of defeating anyone in the world on a good day, on this surface. Once she is mentally prepared for this event I see no reason why she can’t go on a deep run here with her power baseline game, and enters her First Round match against Caty McNally as the huge favorite to advance.
Caty McNally is ranked #130 on the WTA Tour and is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open Championships. The young American has had a lot of success on the doubles tour and will be hoping to replicate that in singles. However she has been dealt just about as tough of a draw as one can get, and will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the First Round. Even though she will have the entire American crowd behind her, the task is still likely too great for her, and she is not expected to pose much of a threat here. Hopefully she will be able to bring some joy to the crowd and have a good account of herself, but it is unlikely that she will come even close to the upset here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, and I am expecting a comfortable win for Karolina Pliskova here. Simply put, she is a much better player than her opponent Caty McNally and I do not forsee her having many issues here. She is very well known for her erratic play at times and her struggles at the majors, but the talent gap here is just too great. McNally is a talented player and will try her best, but I expect that Pliskova will dominate this match from start to finish with her big serve and huge groundstrokes, advancing to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open with relative ease.
