TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as John Isner (19) meets Brandon Nakashima in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
An exciting “All-American” matchup is upon us in the First Round of the 2021 US Open as John Isner and Brandon Nakashima do battle for the third time this year. They split two highly competitive encounters earlier this year and will be ready and rearing to go to take the lead in this head to head. Who will get the win here and advance to the Second Round here in Flushing Meadows?
John Isner is the 19th seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #22 on the ATP Tour. The big-serving American is playing his 15th consecutive US Open, and has never missed his home Grand Slam. After a slow start to the 2021 season he has turned it on since the start of the hard-court swing, winning the Atlanta Open and reaching the Semi-Finals at the Rogers Cup. He also had a notable run to the Semis of the Los Cabos Open where he lost to his current opponent, Brandon Nakashima. He then got his revenge later in the Final in Atlanta. Due to his extensive experience, he enters this match as the favorite but will be careful to not underestimate his opponent here after seeing what he is capable of throughout those two matches.
Brandon Nakashima is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #83 in the world rankings. The young American seems to be a star in the making, and has been having his most successful year on the Tour so far in 2021. He reached the Finals in both Los Cabos and Atlanta, announcing himself on the world stage and signalling that he is ready to compete with the world’s best after years of promise as a top junior. He has had a poor run of form since, only winning two matches in the warm up events for the US Open and will be hoping to turn his fortunes around here against a familiar opponent. However, despite beating Isner a few months ago, a Grand Slam is an entirely different ball game and he is the big underdog here, especially over five sets.
This is the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head series being tied 1-1. Both matches were played earlier this year in Los Cabos and Atlanta and were both extremely close. Despite Brandon Nakashima getting a win over Isner earlier this year, it is hard to look past the big American here. He tends to save his best tennis for when he is at home, and he will be pumped and ready to perform here. Nakashima hasn’t had much success at the big events yet, and it is unlikely that he will be able to sustain the level needed for long enough to win here. This match has the potential to be a tricky one for John Isner, but expect him to pass that test and advance to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open.
