TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Max Purcell in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021.
Will Max Purcell get the biggest win of his career under his belt as he aims to beat the much higher ranked Jannik Sinner? Will Jannik Sinner get his 2021 US Open campaign off to a very strong start as he aims to go far in what are his favourite conditions? This will be an entertaining encounter between a heavy favourite and a player who has nothing to lose, but only one will make their way to the Round of 64 of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Max Purcell will be happy with his performances recently, qualifying for the Winston-Salem Open and reaching the Round of 16 where he lost to the eventual Finalist, Mikael Ymer. Max Purcell is not very well known on the ATP Tour, mainly playing in low level ATP 250 tournaments where the competition is not very tough and other than that he also plays a lot of doubles. Max Purcell, if he is to stand a chance in this match against Jannik Sinner, will have to come out here at the 2021 US Open thinking that he has nothing to lose and he should just play freely. However, this is much easier said than done at this level.
Jannik Sinner has been in good form in the North American hard court season, winning the Washington Open a few weeks ago to claim his biggest title of his young career. Jannik Sinner has been improving and he is setting himself very close to claiming a spot at the ATP Finals at such a young age. Jannik is a star of the future and he has a great all round game, and I expect for him to come out here at the 2021 US Open ready to give it his all as he knows he can cause some upsets along the way as he aims to go as far as possible. However, he should not take Max Purcell too lightly in his first match.
Jannik Sinner and Max Purcell have met 1 time before, with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 1-0. They met in the opening round of the 2020 Australian Open where Jannik won in 3 easy sets. Since then, both players have improved, but Jannik has improved drastically, getting himself so close to the top 10 of the world at the age of 20. Max is a good player, but his real focus should be on doubles and small ATP 250 tournaments. I don’t expect an upset here, I expect a dominant performance by the all round great returning Italian as he eases his way into the Round of 64 of the 2021 US Open.
