TennisSection previews the 2021 Winston-Salem Open as Pablo Carreno Busta takes on Ilya Ivashka in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday, August 26th, 2021.
Will Pablo Carreno Busta move on? Will Ilya Ivashka pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we are already late in the tournament and will see if the number one seed can maintain his level to go all the way. Who will move on to the Semi-Finals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open?
Pablo Carreno Busta played a fantastic match, defeating a very dangerous opponent 6-2 6-3, serving very well and doing exactly what he needed to do. He missed few shots and played aggressively at all the right moments. If he plays the way that he did in that match, I sincerely doubt he will have too much of a problem when coming up against Ilya Ivashka. While Ivashka has been playing some very solid tennis, the consistency Busta has in his game allows him to win most points he’s playing right now, especially against players ranked much lower than him. He’s been playing some great tennis on the hard courts lately, and I expect nothing less of him than to put on a prominent display, making little unforced errors and ripping down-the-line forehands to get him a spot in the semifinals at the 2021 Winston-Salem Open.
Ilya Ivashka played a fantastic match against Struff in his last match, putting on a display of his best tennis beating him 6-2 6-1. He’s playing some amazing tennis, utilizing his very well-rounded and powerful groundstrokes to dominant opponents. When he’s on, he can hit a winner from almost anywhere, he is much like Aslan Karatsev in that way. If he does that successfully, I do believe he can beat Pablo Carreno Busta. However, I suspect that Busta will be able to draw many errors from Ivashka, as his primary playing style is to grind from the baseline, attacking at obvious opportunities. If Busta is able to hit his spots well on the serve and get a lot of returns in play, then I think Ivashka will really struggle with finding ways to beat him.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Ilya Ivashka have met two times before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings were both at the grand slam level on hard courts, Ivashka has not won a set against Carreno Busta yet. Their most recent meeting came two years ago at the Australian Open, this proves my point earlier about Busta being a bad match-up for Ivashka, as with an aggressive playing style like his where he likes to go for many winners, playing someone who likes to grind from the baseline is quite hard as he’ll make more unforced errors than he normally would and he’ll produce many short balls if Busta ever amps up the pace on those longer exchanges where Carreno Busta can use some aggressive tennis himself.
