A very surprising match awaits us in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 French Open as Spaniard Paula Badosa will face Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia. Both players have upset higher ranked players to reach this stage, and are both in their first Grand Slam Quarter-Final. Who will get the win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals of Roland Garros 2021?
Paula Badosa is currently ranked #35 in the WTA world rankings, and has been in fine form so far this year. The Spaniard won the Serbia Open a few weeks ago, and arrived at the 2021 French Open with some serious momentum. She has continued her strong play here at Roland Garros, and is in the Quarter-Finals at a major for the first time. Badosa defeated 2019 Finalist Marketa Vondrousova in the Round of 16 in a very tough three-setter. She struck a grand total of 30 winners and 30 unforced errors, returning serve extremely well to break her opponent five times. While she has been impressive here so far, she has played a lot of tennis this week, with two very difficult three set wins in a row. If fatigue is not an issue for her, she should be considered the favorite to advance here at Roland Garros 2021.
Tamara Zidansek is ranked #85 in the rankings, a full 50 spots behind her Quarter-Final opponent Paula Badosa. The Slovenian started her 2021 French Open campaign with a huge upset in the First Round, defeating sixth seeded Bianca Andreescu in a marathon three setter. She also had a very tough win over Katerina Siniakova in the Third Round, recovering from losing the first set 6-0 to win yet another draining match. While she will definitely be feeling the effects of those long matches, she will take comfort in the fact that her opponent has also played multiple draining three set matches here at Roland Garros 2021. While Zidansek should be considered the underdog here, she has displayed gritty tennis all week long and should not be underestimated, and has a true chance of causing yet another upset here at Roland Garros.
This will be the first meeting between the two players, and is sure to be another close contest. Both woman have caused multiple upsets to reach their first major Quarter-Final here at the 2021 French Open, and while the will both be fatigued, they will be hugely confident. Taking all things into consideration, I am going to back the Spaniard Paula Badosa to get a tough win, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at Roland Garros 2021. She has had an incredibly strong clay court season this year, and I see her as having more tools than her opponent Tamara Zidansek. The Spaniard is also a bit more consistent, which I think will make all the difference here. Zidansek can certainly win a set, so I expect Paula Badosa to win in three sets here, advancing to the Semis at Roland Garros 2021.
