TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Daniil Medvedev (1) meets Alexander Bublik in the Second Round on Tuesday August 10th, 2021.
A very exciting match is expected as top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev faces Alexander Bublik for a spot in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Toronto Open. Both players are known for their flamboyant styles and volatile on court attitudes and antics, so this match is sure to be “must see TV”. Will the world number two and pre-tournament favorite Medvedev get the win and advance to the Round of 16? Or can the unseeded Kazakh cause one of the biggest upsets of the year and win here?
Daniil Medvedev is the top seed here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is currently ranked #2 in the ATP world rankings. The big Russian has really taken his game up a level over the past few seasons and has firmly cemented himself near the top of the charts. He has a fantastic opportunity to win a fourth Masters-1000 title here with Novak Djokovic skipping the event and Rafael Nadal struggling lately. His big serve and consistently aggressive groundstrokes are perfectly suited for this surface here at the Rogers Cup and he enters his first match against Alexander Bublik as the big favorite. It will be interesting to see how Medvedev bounces back from his crushing Quarter-Final loss at the Olympics and he is heavily favored to advance here.
Alexander Bublik is unseeded here at the 2021 Toronto Open and is ranked #39 on the ATP Tour. The Kazakh was long known as a talented but hot headed player, but he has greatly matured over the past few seasons and has quietly been putting together a decent season in 2021. While he has had some good results, he has been quite inconsistent, as evidenced by his Semi-Final showing in Newport followed by a First Round loss immediately after in Washington. Bublik will have been hoping for a strong result here at the Rogers Cup, however the draw has not been kind to him as he has been drawn against the top seeded Daniil Medvedev in the Second Round. He had an impressive win in the First Round over Dan Evans and will be full of confidence, but he will have to play the tennis of his life to have a chance here.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the Russian leading the head to head series 2-0. They played earlier this year at the French Open, with Medvedev winning in three comfortable sets. I am expecting more of the same here at the 2021 Toronto Open, with the big Russian playing some fantastic tennis this season and he will have his eyes firmly focused on the title here. Alexander Bublik is certainly capable of some top class tennis and can challenge the world’s best, but it is unlikely that he can sustain it long enough to win here. Daniil Medvedev should win in two tight sets, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the Rogers Cup.
