French Open 2022: Alex De Minaur vs. Hugo Gaston Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 French Open as Alex De Minaur takes on Hugo Gaston in the first round on Tuesday, May 24th, 2022.

On the back of a very productive clay-court season, Alex De Minaur will be aiming to keep that momentum going at the French Open. Although he faces an awkward first-rounder against the flamboyant Hugo Gaston. Who will come out on top?

Alex De Minaur has compiled a personal best winning percentage on a clay court in the last two months. A semifinal run in Barcelona gave him confidence and belief that he could adjust to the grind of the most demanding surface in all of tennis. His chase for that first final on clay will have to wait after falling short yet again in Lyon in the last tournament before the French Open. De Minaur will be the red-hot favorite among the Aussies to reach the second round, but his record in Paris is not the best. Can he change it this year?

Hugo Gaston will be standing in De Minaur’s way. The French lefty is in the midst of a terrible run of form that has seen him win a meager five matches and losing 14. He looks a shadow of the player that shocked the tennis world at the 2020 French Open where he made the fourth round against the odds. Gaston can still pull the rabbit out of the hat, considering home advantage, but his confidence is shot. He has also struggled physically, as evident in the tournament in Munich where he retired midway through the third set.

Alex De Minaur and Hugo Gaston have not clashed on the ATP Tour. Monday’s match at the French Open will be their first official meeting. Gaston tends to be a different ball game when he plays on home territory. Historically, he has always raised his level at home tournaments against the higher-ranked players. But I can’t seem to find reasons he will turn his fortunes around with the kind of form he is in. Granted he may well steal a set, but De Minaur should be too solid to let this tie  slip.
