Will the higher-ranked Nikoloz Basilashvili get the win? The bookies don’t seem to agree. The Georgian has a pesky customer in Hugo Gaston in the first round of the Nordea Open. Who will prevail?
Nikoloz Basilashvili has a knack of defying the odds when you least expect it. His five ATP title wins all came out of the blue. Basilashvili nearly repeated the trick at the Qatar Open in the first half of the season but lost in the final to Roberto Bautista Agut. He continues to be wildly inconsistent ahead of his second visit to the Nordea Open. His 12-22 record for the year is among the worst for the players ranked in the world’s top 50. Can he turn his fortunes around when he takes on Hugo Gaston?
Hugo Gaston is also as unpredictable as they come. The French lefty is such a joy to watch when everything he puts together is able to come off his wand, but has a habit of sometimes of overcomplicating matters. Nonetheless, Gaston will be looking to improve on his 11-18 record for the year. The 21-year-old Next Gen star is playing in his first full season on the ATP Tour, and has found life extremely difficult to plough through the field in most ATP main draws. Can he find his form at the Nordea Open?
Hugo Gaston and Nikoloz Basilashvili have not played on the ATP Tour. Tuesday’s match at the Nordea Open will be their first official meeting. Basilashvili is subject of a match fixing allegation as revealed by some very reliable sources during the weekend. It remains to be seen whether there could be some repercussions and he might not be in the right frame of mind to compete on Tuesday. With that said, Gaston’s court craft should give him plenty of thinking to do on the court.
