TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Benoit Paire takes on Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021.
Will Benoit Paire finally show some consistency and manage to win another match this year? Will Mackenzie McDonald carry over the brilliant form he’s displayed from the Washington Open over to Canada? This match-up will serve for an interesting one, where we could have so many different ways the match could go. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Benoit Paire has had a very bad year, with the talent that he has, he hardly applied himself and got few wins over the year. He occasionally stepped up and played at a high level. However, on average he was often tanking if he ever got behind a little, or just if he got upset at the smallest things, he would begin to lose all hope in winning that match. Needless to say, Paire’s mental stamina is not what it needs to be for him to be able to excel on the ATP Tour. He can do it, as he has one of the best attacking backhands on the ATP Tour, maybe even the best. However, it will be a tough match up for him in Mackenzie McDonald, as someone who has been in good form and will most certainly not give up at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Mackenzie McDonald has just had some great results at the Washington Open, losing in the Final in such a tight 3 set match against the eventual champion Jannik Sinner. He defeated many top players, including defending champion Nick Kyrgios in straight sets. Assuming he carries on this form, he should feel confident about this match and being able to move on to the next round. Particularly against Benoit Paire, even if he wasn’t playing as good as he is right now, I’m sure he would still feel confident, let’s see if he can get some momentum and make another deep run here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Benoit Paire and Mackenzie McDonald have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their most recent meeting was actually at the Washington Open where McDonald is thriving right now. As mentioned before, Benoit occasionally steps up and plays at a high level, he did in fact do this against McDonald, before coming up just short in 3 sets. He most certainly has a chance to come through come Tuesday, but it won’t be easy, considering he just lost to him and knowing his mental fortitude, it will most certainly be an interesting contest. I expect McDonald to use the momentum and confidence gained last week in Washington to get another win over Paire and get himself in the Round of 32 at the 2021 Toronto Open.
