Fourth seeded Cristian Garin is one of the premier clay-court players on the ATP Tour, and he will undoubtedly have his eyes firmly fixed on the title here at the 2021 Gstaad Open. Next up for him in the Quarter-Finals will be the young Frenchman Hugo Gaston, who has displayed flashes of high-quality potential throughout his brief professional career. Cristian Garin is the fourth seed here at the 2021 Gstaad Open, and is currently ranked #19 on the ATP Tour. The Chilean is one of the best clay-court players on the Tour and has dominated the lower level events over the past few seasons. After a strong Wimbledon campaign he will be happy to get back onto his favored surface, and anything less than a title here will be disappointing. He crushed Marc Polmans 6-3, 6-0, an opponent that has given him problems in the past, and he seems to be as sharp as ever. He enters this Quarter-Final match against Hugo Gaston as the massive favorite due to his far superior ranking and experience, and will very likely be able to overpower the young Frenchman at will. Once he is fully focused here and keeps his error count low, he will be expecting to advance to the Semis quite comfortably.
Hugo Gaston is unseeded here at the 2021 Gstaad Open and is ranked #155 on the ATP Tour. The youngster burst onto the scene at the 2020 French Open, upsetting several highly-rated players including Stan Wawrinka before falling to Dominic Thiem in an epic Fourth Round match. He has largely disappointed since then, as many had him pegged to be the next breakout superstar on tour after that performance. Gaston remains a hugely talented player with time on his side, and started strongly here in Gstaad, defeating Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Federico Delbonis to reach this stage. Despite his strong play, he knows that he will need the performance of his lifetime to get the win here against the highly-rated Cristian Garin, and enters this match as the big underdog.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and only one outcome is possible, a straight-sets win for Cristian Garin. Hugo Gaston is a very talented player who in my mind will certainly be a top 100 player very soon, but he lacks the firepower to be about to trouble the Chilean star. Garin is likely to pummel him from the baseline, pushing him back at every opportunity. This will be a routine win the Cristian Garin, who will advance to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Gastaad Open with relative ease.
