Will Lucas Pouille shock us all and show us some amazing form which we have not seen from him in many years now? Will Dusan Lajovic begin his clay Hamburg Open campaign off strongly and show us the tennis which he started 2021 with? This will be a very tight match between two experienced opponents, but only one will make their way to the Second Round here at the 2021 Hamburg Open. Who will it be?
Lucas Pouille has been slowly but surely tumbling down the rankings in the tennis world. Having had many inconsistency issues, followed by lack of confidence, and then on top of that injuries, the Frenchmans career has not panned out the way he or many expected it to. Pouille now 27-years-old, wants to have a fair few more years on the ATP Tour and get back to his best. However, the level he has shown in 2021, going 3-7 in his matches does not give anyone much confidence. He will aim to get something going here at the 2021 Hamburg Open against an also out-of-form opponent in Dusan Lajovic, but I am unsure if he has the game anymore.
Dusan Lajovic has also had a pretty bad 2021 season, starting off strongly at the ATP Cup and in some ATP 250 and 500 tournaments, such as the Rotterdam Open where he beat Daniil Medvedev right after his Australian Open Final. However, since then he has been in and out of form. This has resulted in an 8-16 W/L record this season. Dusan, when on top of his game, is so hard to beat. The Serb has an amazing game and his one-handed backhand is so hard to stop when he is confident. Now that we are on clay I believe he will be getting back to his best because this is his favourite surface and the surface where he reached his best career result, the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters Final. However, he needs to be ready from the start as he meets Lucas Pouille.
Dusan Lajovic and Lucas Pouille have met 4 times before, with Dusan Lajovic leading the head to head 3-1. If this was in the middle of the clay court season I would chose Dusan Lajovic to win this match in straight sets with my eyes closed. However, because this is the first clay tournament in a while for both players, I see this encounter being tighter. Lucas Pouille will have his chances if he’s at his best, but Dusan Lajovic is more experienced and in better form even though he is also not in the best of form. It will be a tussle, but Dusan will make his way to the Second Round of the 2021 Hamburg Open.
