TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Pablo Carreno Busta (2) will face Mikael Ymer on Wednesday September 21st, 2021.
Second seeded Pablo Carreno Busta has had a poor run of form and enters the 2021 Moselle Open low in confidence, and hoping to get his confidence back by going on a deep run on this type of surface. He will meet the young Swede Mikael Ymer for a spot in the Quarters. His opponent is still fairly inexperienced at this level, can he score the biggest upset of his career and send the Spaniard packing? PCB would normally be considered the heavy favorite in a match like this but he clearly hasn’t been himself this season, and if it is one time that he is vulnerable it would be now, and he will have to call on all of his experience here at the Moselle Open.
Pablo Carreno Busta is currently ranked #16 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The Spaniard is normally known to be one of the most consistent performers on Tour but has been in very poor lately and his confidence will likely be low. After being ranked in the top 10 for a while he has seen his ranking slide a bit and he will be very eager to have a good week here in Metz to get his season back on track. However, he has never performed particularly well on this surface and tends to struggle on the quicker courts. A stunning First Round loss at the US Open will be weighing on his mind here, and his opponent Mikael Ymer will be looking at the upset here despite being the big underdog. Carreno Busta is still heavily favored here but is certainly vulnerable at this stage.
Mikael Ymer is ranked at a career-high #75 in the world and is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The young Swede spends much of his time on the Challenger Tour but has recently had some decent results, catapulting him into the top 80. His run to the Final in Winston-Salem was hugely surprising, but he will still be very confident from that result heading into the Metz Open. He carried that fine form into his First Round victory over Jan-Lennard Struff, upsetting the much higher ranked player in straight sets with a wonderful display of tennis. While he lacks a major weapon, he can be aggressive from both sides and is one of the quickest players on tour. His opponent Pablo Carreno Busta is one of the best players in the world and the young Swede is the big underdog, but knows that he is in better form than his opponent and will be dreaming of the upset.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and despite the big gap between their rankings I am expecting a close encounter. Pablo Carreno Busta would usually be favored to win this match quite easily since he is the better all-around player by quite some distance, but his recent form has been woeful at best. Mikael Ymer is a very scrappy young player with a lot of heart, and is capable of some very solid tennis. The Spaniard will still win this match on sheer experience alone, but I do think that it will be a battle, with the Swedish player possibly winning a set. Expect him to start off slowly, but PCB will eventually get it going and get the win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Moselle Open.
