Anna Blinkova put on a very strong performance in the Round of 128, beating Timea Babos in straight sets 6-2/6-2. Usually in WTA matches in the opening rounds of Grand Slams we see very tight matches, however, Blinkova was just dominant from start to finish. Anna Blinkova will now want to build on the confidence and momentum gained with that win to come in here and cause the upset. However, her opponent Ashleigh Barty put on a solid performance in her opening round match where she found her form as she came back from her hip injury.
Ashleigh Barty came through a very entertaining match in the Round of 128, beating the experienced and beloved Carla Suarez Navarro in 3 sets 6-1/6-7/6-1. Carla was never going to be an easy opponent and she was able to use all of her energy to get that second set under her belt. However, Barty turned up her level in the final set to ensure she was not knocked out early. Ashleigh Barty will now have to be at the top of her game as she meets an in form Anna Blinkova in order to prevent the early upset and get herself further down the line at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Ashleigh Barty and Anna Blinkova have never met before, with this being their first meeting. I expect for this to be an entertaining encounter because of Blinkova’s strong performance in the Round of 128. However, Ashleigh Barty was at another level in the final set against Carla, and if she can come out playing at that level throughout this match, she will not allow Anna to cause the upset. I expect Anna to have nothing to lose and give it her all, but Ashleigh Barty’s slice will hurt her opponent, especially on grass where it works even better. Ashleigh will win and make her way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
