Local player Liam Broady delighted the home fans with an outstanding victory in the First Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Next up for him is a much tougher test in ninth seeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman who despite not being a grass-court player is a formidable opponent on any surface. Can Broady cause yet another upset here and advance to the Third Round?
Diego Schwartzman is currently ranked #11 on the ATP Tour and is the ninth seed at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Argentine has been in outstanding form over the past couple years, breaking into the top 10 of the rankings for the first time. Normally one of the most consistent performers on the tour, Schwartzman now finds himself on his least favorite surface, and one that he has struggled on over his career. Due to his small stature and relatively weak serve, he struggles to compete with the more powerful players as he doesn’t have much time to get behind the ball and employ his regular game. Despite his limitations on grass he enters this match against Liam Broady as the favorite due to his superior experience and ranking, and should be expected to advance here.
Liam Broady is currently ranked #143 in the ATP world rankings and entered the 2021 Wimbledon Championships by virtue of being given a wild card. The Brit didn’t have an ideal preparation for this event, losing in the First Round of Queens and the Second Round of Eastbourne. Despite this, he was outstanding in his win over Marco Cecchinato, dropping only seven games in total to the very experienced Italian. Broady served extremely well and broke at well, and his confidence will be sky-high here. As impressive as he was, he will have to be even better if he is to defeat Diego Schwartzman, a player ranked over 100 spots than him. However, if it is one surface where the Argentine is vulnerable it is on grass, so Broady will have the feeling that he has a chance here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I expect it to be a closer match than the rankings suggest. Diego Schwartzman seems like to obvious favorite on paper due to his much higher ranking, but this is a surface that does not suit him well at all, and the bigger and more powerful Liam Broady will be seeking to take full advantage. All things considered I am going with the 11th ranked Argentine to get the win, but it won’t be easy. The Brit serves well and may win a set or even two, but Schwartzman’s experience should prove crucial and he will win here, advancing to the Third Round at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
