TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Elena Rybakina (21) meets Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31) in the Quarter-Finals on Tuesday June 8th, 2021.
Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will face Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 French Open. This is not a matchup that many would have expected here at Roland Garros, but both women have played outstanding tennis to reach this stage, upsetting higher-ranked players along the way. Who will get the win and advance to their first major Semi-Final here at Roland Garros 2021?
Elena Rybakina is currently ranked #22 in the WTA world rankings and is seeded #21 here at Roland Garros 2021. The Kazakh has played fantastic tennis so far here in Paris, winning her first four matches without dropping a set. Most notably, she defeated seventh seeded Serena 6-3, 7-5 in the Round of 16, a shocking upset given how well the American had been playing. Many considered Serena to be the favorite to win here at the 2021 French Open now that the top seeds had been eliminated, and now it is Rybakina that will take her place in the Quarters here. While she enters this match against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as the favorite due to her superior ranking, she does not have anywhere near the experience that her opponent does, and would be wise to not underestimate her here.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is ranked #32 in the world, and is seeded #31 here at the 2021 French Open. Like her opponent Elena Rybakina, the Russian has caused some upsets here at Roland Garros to arrive in the Quarters, notably defeating one of the pre-tournament favorites Aryna Sabalenka in the Third Round before a shocking comeback victory over Victoria Azarenka in the Round of 16. Those type of performances will have her confidence sky high, which is bad news for her Quarter-Final opponent. While Pavlyuchenkova is not ranked as high as Rybakina, she has a lot more experience, and is a former Quarter-Finals here at Roland Garros. Despite being the underdog here, I think that she has a very good chance of getting the win and advancing to her first major Semi-Final here at Roland Garros 2021.
This will be the first meeting between Elena Rybakina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and both players have had similar paths to reach this stage of the 2021 French Open. This is a difficult match to predict, as they are quite close in the rankings and have spent a similar amount of time on court so far here in Paris. After taking everything into consideration, I am going with the veteran Russian here to get an extremely close three set win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at Roland Garros 2021. I expect her experience to prove crucial here in the late stages of a Grand Slam event, and while the young Kazakh Rybakina is extremely talented, the nerves may affect her a little bit more. This is sure to be an exciting and long battle, but ultimately the Russian will prevail, advancing to the Semis here in Paris.
